In this update, we summarize the key Canadian and US immigration developments from August 2026.
August Express Entry Draws: Two CEC Draws – CRS 516 and CRS 523
On August 5, 2026, IRCC issued 3,000 invitations to Canada Experience Class candidates with a CRS score of 516 or higher. This continues a trend of high minimum scores, with all Canadian Experience Class draws requiring at least 514 points since March 2026. Then, IRCC issued 1,000 invitations to apply in another Canada Experience Class draw on August 18, 2026, with a minimum CRS score of 523. This marks an increase from the August 5 draw, underscoring the increasing competitiveness in this category.
Canadian Passport Renewal Now Available Online
All eligible Canadian adults can renew their passports through the IRCC online portal rather than by mail or in person at a Service Canada Centre. Existing eligibility requirements remain unchanged, and the digital process follows the same 20-business-day service standard as before. Applicants should note that their current passport is cancelled upon submission of an online application, so anyone needing to travel within that 20-business-day window should apply in person instead.
Growing Backlog for Citizenship by Descent Applications
Processing times for Proof of Citizenship by Descent applications have risen sharply since Bill C-3 came into force on December 15, 2025, moving from roughly nine months to a current estimate of 33 months. As of August, more than 120,000 applications were awaiting a decision, driven by both surging demand and reduced processing capacity at IRCC. Applicants should ensure their applications are complete and well-documented before filing, as incomplete submissions risk refusal after a lengthy wait.
Expedited US Visitor Visa Appointments in Canada
Beginning August 18, 2026, the US Department of State launched a pilot program allowing B1/B2 visa applicants in Canada to pay a $750 USD fee for a guaranteed B1/B2 visa interview within 10 business days. This is separate from the existing emergency appointment process, which requires proof of exceptional circumstances, and it runs only through December 31, 2026. The fee does not guarantee a visa will be issued, and expedited appointments cannot be rescheduled without forfeiting the fee.
