Economic Immigration - Express Entry
The Express Entry system allows selected individuals to apply for permanent residence in Canada through one of multiple Canadian Immigration programs such as the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, or the Federal Skilled Trade Program, as well as some Provincial Nominees.
There are 2-steps to the process. Firstly, if an applicant falls into one of the classes mentioned above, the applicant will submit information including educational details, official language test results, an educational credential assessment, and work experience information into the online Express Entry system. If an applicant has a spouse, it is advisable that the spouse also writes an official language test and obtains an educational credential assessment. Once this basic information is in the system (or “pool”), it will be assessed against a Comprehensive Ranking System that looks at several components of one’s application.
Applicants who rank highly enough will be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA). This is the second step – the actual filing of an Application for Permanent Residence. The second step is also an on-line process.
To receive an Invitation to Apply, an application will need to be selected during one of IRCC’s “draws” from the pool. On a regular basis, IRCC selects a predetermined number of applicants with the highest scores. Applicants can remain in the pool for up to one year. If an applicant receives an ITA and files and application for permanent residence, he or she is still subject to an evaluation against all requirements of the immigration class and all admissibility concerns such as medical and criminal.

How can I apply for express entry?
The express entry application is a two-step process. The first step is to submit your profile which requires a language test, an educational credential assessment report, and your passport. After your profile is submitted, you will await the issuance of invitation to apply for permanent residence. The next step is to then submit a more substantial application including reference letters, additional identification documents, police clearance, and a medical examination.
Who is eligible for express entry?
Foreign nationals with post-secondary degrees, skilled work experience, and satisfactory proficiency in English or French are prospective candidates for express entry. Candidates must also meet the requirements for one of three federal immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or the Canadian Experience Class.
