Today’s topic:
- Canada’s new Entry Requirement for Mexican citizens.
The Government of Canada has announced changes to its entry requirements for Mexican citizens. Effective from February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, these changes will impact Mexican citizens seeking to enter Canada. Here’s what you need to know about the new travel requirements:
Adjustments to Entry Requirements:
Mexican citizens who do not hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have not held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years must now apply for a Temporary Resident Visa. For those Mexican citizens who do hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years, they are eligible to apply for an eTA for air travel to Canada for short visits. All Mexicans seeking to enter Canada by land or see must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa.
Study permit applications will continue to be filed from outside of Canada and with the new requirements Mexican citizens seeking a work permit must now apply from outside of Canada. Port of entry applications for work permits are no longer possible for Mexican citizens.
Important Notes:
All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before the specified effective date will be invalidated, except for those linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit.
Mexicans who currently hold a valid work permit or a valid study permit can continue to travel to Canada with their existing eTA until the validity date of the work or study permit.
Mexican citizens who are in Canada as at the effective date may remain in Canada until the conclusion of their authorized period of stay; however, either a Temporary Resident Visa or eTA will be required for future trips to Canada.
