- Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Intake Opens in Late July
On July 17, 2025, IRCC announced that it would accept up to 10,000 sponsorships under the parents and grandparents’ program throughout this year. The program will begin to send invitations to apply to potential sponsors who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in 2020. This announcement signals that the government is still working its way through the pool of applicants who had submitted interest to sponsor forms in 2020.
Family Sponsorship can be one of the most straightforward paths to permanent residence in Canada. Since 2020, the government has been working through a considerable backlog of parents and grandparents sponsorship Interest to Sponsor forms that was caused due to pandemic disruptions and extremely high demand for the program. Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who could not submit interest to sponsor forms in 2020 do still have options to visit Canada. Specifically, they should consider applying for a Super Visa, which is a multiple entry visa that is valid for up to 10 years and allows for parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for 5 years at a time. At this time, it is unclear when the parents and grandparents’ sponsorship program will re-open for new applications.
Measures to support Ukrainians and their family members under CUAET extended for an additional year.
Canada has extended its temporary policy to allow access to open work permits and study permits for individuals who came to Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) measures for an additional year. The CUAET measures and other public policies were put into place to protect the thousands of Ukrainians who sought safe haven in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Under this policy Ukrainians and their family members who came to Canada on or before March 31, 2024, under the CUAET measures and have valid status can apply until March 31, 2026, for a new open work permit, a new study permit or a renewal of their current work/study permit.
The government also announced that all remaining applications that had been submitted under CUAET measures on or before July 15, 2023, will soon be processed to completion. Holders of CUAET visas who are still overseas can travel to Canada during the validity of their visa but will do so as regular temporary resident visa holders and IRCC officers will determine their length of stay.
