Today’s topic:

  • IRCC announces a temporary policy to facilitate additional off-campus work hours for international students.

On October 7, 2022,  Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced that between November 15, 2022, and December 31, 2023, there would be a temporary change to the number of weekly hours that international students are permitted to work off-campus while class is in session.   Up until the time of the temporary change, there has been a 20-hour per week maximum that eligible post-secondary international students were permitted to work off campus.

The international students are still expected to maintain a course of full-time study.

Between November 15, 2022 and December 31, 2023,  those international students who are in Canada with off-campus work authorization noted on their study permit will not face this restriction.  Those international students with pending study permit applications will also be eligible to take advantage of this change once their application is approved.

The Canadian government advises that they have made this temporary change to the off-campus work program for international student in Canada on study permits to assist Canadian employers in addressing on-going labour shortages as the economy continues to recovery.
